Today ClearScore celebrates its first birthday. Justin, its CEO and co-founder, reflects on their incredible journey

Today is a great day. It’s the first anniversary of the launch of ClearScore coming out of testing and being launched to the general public on TV. Our first ads went live at 11.11am on the 15th July 2015 – we’ve been in market for exactly one year.

It’s been an amazing journey. I’m an optimist- I think you have to be to be an entrepreneur- but the response to ClearScore has been so much more than I could have ever dreamed. It’s so humbling. We now stand at over 2 million users who have seen their credit report and score using ClearScore. Hundreds of thousands have used ClearScore to get better products.

From the bottom of my heart, and from the entire team, thank you to those who have chosen to use ClearScore. We work so hard to make the product as good as it can be. We don’t always get everything right but we do try our best.

The impact that we have had on the industry has also been extraordinary. Since our launch, Noddle, the free product from Callcredit, has started giving free scores, significantly improved their product, and imitated much of what we do – we regard this as the sincerest form of flattery! Experian has teamed up with credit card providers to give free scores away and we hear they are readying their own launch. We welcome these responses because we have always passionately believed that people should be in control of their credit report and score – for us the more this happens the better. Plus, it’s exciting to cause these big companies to change for the better!

As I have reflected on the first year of our journey I’ve tried to identify why we have been able to achieve what we have. Is it our leading technology, our beautiful product experience, our incredible investors, our advanced analytical capability, our brilliant marketing? All these are important and have played their part, but nothing is as important as the single belief that what we do at ClearScore really matters.

ClearScore was founded to ensure that financial well-being can be something that everyone can have whether rich or poor, young or old. We want to have an impact on our users’ lives, on financial product providers, and on the world of financial management. ClearScore is focused on sorting money out- not just for the affluent but for everyone. We started with the credit report and score but we are working every day to integrate new ideas, new data and new approaches to solving this most fundamental of problems.

What we do goes further than just our product and business. Our 43 people are an international, talented, passionate, slightly off the wall, joyous family. We laugh and cry together. Over the past year new friendships have been formed, both Matt and Frank got married and Neil had a baby. Team members have successfully settled into their first job, graduated courses, had loads of birthdays and we have all enjoyed a serious amount of cake.

Of course life has also caused great sadness. Some of us have lost loved ones, seen relationships finish and overcome health challenges. In many ways a growing business can be a wonderful distraction but it can also be a source of stress. I hope that we have supported as much as we have celebrated.

When all is said and done we’ve only got one life. Work/life balance is a red herring based on an outmoded concept of labour. When on the very rare occasions our site goes down at 3am, we don’t say “I’ll do it in the morning”. We work hard to sort it out. Equally on those mornings when perhaps we don’t bound out of bed to rush to work, we don’t worry if one of the team turns up at 10am. The biggest question we can answer is, “Am I living a life that I’m proud of, does what I do matter to me and the world?” For most of our team, ClearScore is a major part of answering that question positively.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making ClearScore what it is. ClearScore is a collective effort from our users, team members both past and present, our investors, our board members, our partners and our families who allow us to do what we do.
