You’ve probably heard of the dark web. Known as the “back alley of the internet”, it’s a hotbed of criminal activity. Criminals use the dark web as a marketplace for selling anything and everything illegal: drugs, weapons, illicit pornography, personal information, and more.

You might be wondering what this has to do with you?

Well, when a hacker steals your personal information (for example, through a company data breach or if you lose your wallet), the dark web is where it ends up being sold. If your details end up on the dark web, you could be at risk of identity fraud - and sooner than you think.

Because the dark web is hard to access and the data is encrypted, it’s hard to know how to protect yourself from this form of identity crime.

At ClearScore, we’ve developed three Coaching plans to help you protect your identity and minimise the risk of your personal information being sold on the dark web.

1. Prevent your identity from being compromised. This plan is perfect for anyone who could use an introduction to identity crime and the steps you can take to stay safer online, from creating complex passwords to checking if your details have been hacked.

2. Monitor your finances to spot signs of identity theft early. Regularly checking your credit report on ClearScore, as well as your bank statements, is one way to find out if anyone is using your details to apply for credit.

3. Recover your identity if you do fall victim to theft or fraud. Hopefully this doesn’t happen, but if it does, it’s vital that you act fast. This plan will give you tips tailored to your unique situation, to help you take your identity back into your own hands and reduce the risk of it happening again.
