Lost your job due to the coronavirus crisis? It might seem daunting but you’re far from alone in this. Fortunately, there are plenty of industries that need help. Child minding for healthcare workers, call centres and supermarkets are just some of the sectors where there’s demand for new employees at the moment. Here are 10 paths to consider if you’re in the market for a new role.

The telco giant is in the market for 1,000 new local call centre staff. It made the announcement it was hiring for these positions after its call centres in the Philippines closed as a result of the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

Telstra’s purpose-built recruitment site, Telstra Careers, also has information about more than 100 other jobs that are vacant across its business, including project managers, designers and team leaders.

There is plenty of work in regional areas harvesting crops, canning fruit and working on farms. For instance, 100 people are needed to pick blueberries on this farm alone from June to November.

There are lots of other fruit picking opportunities around the country - check out the federal government’s Jobactive site for more information. These roles are physically demanding, but many positions also include free accommodation.

From bakers to trolley cleaners and state managers, Coles and Woolworths have dozens of positions vacant in metropolitan and regional areas.

People working on the health frontline are desperate for support while they fight the COVID-19 battle.

Kudos to the team that set up the Doctors without Babysitters (meets Arts workers without Work) Facebook page. It matches health workers (not just doctors but also nurses and allied health workers) with people in the arts and creative fields looking for work. Visit the Facebook page to apply to join this group.

Artstasker, which matches arts workers with people needing paid odd jobs, is another similar page.

Sites such as Freelancer, Upwork and Ozlance have thousands of different employment opportunities including copy typing, research, gardening and odd jobs. If you’ve dreamed of moving into a new industry, these portals can be a great place to start to build up expertise in a new area.

Considering joining the Australian defence force? There are numerous job openings in the armed forces across areas like aviation, administration and combat and security.

Check out Defence Jobs for more information (it’s worth noting that many of these jobs require significant technical expertise and prior experience).

Now may be the time to set up your own business if you’ve always wanted to be your own boss. If that sounds like you, why not think through gaps in the market that need filling right now?

Online is everything at the moment, given social distancing. People want to be entertained and educated at home, so you could offer online tutoring for students at home, webcast cooking tutorials or exercise classes for those who are self-isolating or working from home.

New jobs are posted every day on job boards such as Seek and Career One . Set up alerts on these sites in the areas you are looking for to be notified immediately when a job is posted that suits your skills.

LinkedIn is coming into its own right now as more people are based at home. It’s a great place to identify companies you want to work for and find potential mentors who could turn into employers down the track.

There are plenty of options to give back to the community in paid work. Carer positions, in-home domestic support and transport jobs are just some of the options in this area. Afford and Hireup recruit for staff wanting to work with people who have special needs.

These are just some of the options available to you, but by no means all of them. The key is to be tenacious and persistent and surround yourself with people who can support you while you look for work.

Best of luck!
