Do Nectar and Tesco Clubcard Points Expire?

Nectar points don't have a fixed expiry date, but a Nectar account can be closed — and any points on it lost — if no points are earned or redeemed for a continuous 12-month period. To keep an account active, scanning a Nectar app or card at Sainsbury's, Argos, or eBay at least once a year is enough to avoid this.

How Tesco Clubcard Points and Vouchers Work

Tesco issues Clubcard vouchers with statements in February, May, August, and November each year. Vouchers can also be requested early via the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app or online account, once at least 150 points have been earned. The conversion happens immediately on request.

Vouchers expire 24 months after they're issued. Checking the specific expiry date for each voucher in the app's "Vouchers" section is the most reliable way to avoid losing value.

Shoppers earn one Clubcard point for every £1 spent in-store and online at Tesco. Vouchers can be spent directly at Tesco, or exchanged for double their value (2x) with over 100 Tesco Reward Partners, including Disney+, the RAC, and English Heritage. Some partners occasionally offer a higher, time-limited rate of 3x value. Checking the app before redeeming shows whether an enhanced rate is currently available for a specific partner.

Do You Get Tesco Clubcard or Nectar Points at Esso?

Which loyalty scheme applies at an Esso station depends entirely on whether that specific station has a Tesco Express shop attached. The two schemes don't overlap at the same location.

Esso stations with a Tesco Express: these collect Tesco Clubcard points, not Nectar. The rate is 1 Clubcard point for every £3 spent on fuel, and 1 Clubcard point for every £1 spent on car washes or other in-store purchases.

Standard Esso stations without a Tesco Express: these collect Nectar points instead. Points are earned by scanning a Nectar card or using the Esso app when buying fuel, at the standard rate of 1 point per litre. Nectar points collected this way combine with the same balance built up at Sainsbury's, Argos, and eBay.

Checking which type of station is nearby (via the Esso Tesco Clubcard Rewards page for Clubcard-eligible sites, or the Nectar app's station locator for standard Esso sites) avoids any confusion about which card to scan.

How Nectar Points Work

Nectar cardholders collect points when shopping with participating retailers, most closely associated with Sainsbury's, which also offers Nectar Prices (a separate discount scheme applied at checkout for cardholders).

One Nectar point is earned per £1 spent in-store at Sainsbury's, and one point per litre of fuel at Sainsbury's petrol stations and participating Esso stations. Esso stations that also have a Tesco Express shop are an exception. These collect Tesco Clubcard points instead, not Nectar.

Each Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsbury's, but some redemption options offer better value. At participating Esso stations, swapping 300 Nectar points (worth £1.50 at standard value) gives 5p off every litre of fuel, on a fill of 10 to 60 litres — a maximum saving of £3 on a 60-litre fill, effectively doubling the standard value of the points used.
