Barclays offers a one-off cash reward to residential mortgage customers who install certain energy-efficient home improvements called the Greener Home Reward. It's a limited-time offer that Barclays can withdraw at any time without notice.
Improvement type | What's covered | Reward |
Low carbon heating | Air source heat pump, ground source heat pump, biomass pellet boiler | £1,000 |
Solar energy | Solar thermal (hot water), solar electricity panels (photovoltaics), solar battery storage | £500 |
Only one reward is paid per customer, ever. Making more than one eligible improvement doesn't mean two rewards. Joint mortgage holders receive one reward between them. And having claimed once, you can't claim again on a future property.
Note what isn't on the list: insulation, glazing, doors and EV charging points aren't eligible for the Greener Home Reward. Those appear under Barclays' separate Greener Home Loan, which works differently — see below.
You'll need a residential (owner-occupier) Barclays mortgage on your primary UK residence. Buy-to-let is excluded, as are foreign currency mortgages, staff mortgages taken before 2003, Interest Free Assistance Loans, Shared Appreciation Mortgages and Protected Appreciation Mortgages.
You also need to:
Pay your mortgage by direct debit — the reward is paid into that account
Not be in arrears at the time of claiming
Not be in breach of your mortgage terms, including obtaining any consents needed for retrofitting work
Have made your most recent mortgage payment by direct debit
Apply directly through the Barclays website. The work must be carried out by an MCS certified business or tradesperson — Barclays links to MCS's own installer search.
Once the work is done, submit your claim form within three months of the date on your MCS certificate. Barclays will then ask for the certificate itself, which you have one month to provide. The certificate must confirm the specific improvement and show the mortgaged property's address.
Accepted claims are paid within 30 days.
Barclays won't pay the reward if the improvement cost you less than the reward is worth, after deducting any third-party contribution such as a government grant.
This matters when combining the reward with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers up to £7,500 toward air and ground source heat pumps. If a grant brings your out-of-pocket cost below £1,000, the Greener Home Reward isn't payable on top. The two can be combined, but only where enough of the cost falls to you.
The reward is inclusive of VAT and isn't subject to UK income tax for personal customers claiming on their primary residence. Barclays notes there could be tax implications if you run a business from the property.
Barclays states that the reward carries no guarantee of improving your EPC rating or producing energy savings, and that claiming it doesn't qualify you for a Barclays Green Home Mortgage or any other product.
If you're borrowing to fund the work rather than claiming against an existing mortgage, Barclays' Greener Home Loan offers tiered cashback based on loan size, and covers a wider range of improvements: insulation (excluding spray foam), A-rated double or triple glazing, secondary glazing, new insulated external doors, and home EV charging points, alongside heat pumps and solar.
It has different conditions — you need an existing Barclays current account, at least 90% of the loan must go on eligible improvements, and you have six months from loan acceptance to claim.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
