The Barclaycard Platinum Cashback Plus was a no-annual-fee card aimed at overseas spending. During a promotional period that ran until 31 August 2023, it charged no non-sterling transaction fees on either purchases or cash withdrawals made abroad, and paid 0.25% cashback on all spending. After that date, a 2.99% fee applied to non-sterling purchases and cash withdrawals.

Its most distinctive feature was the treatment of interest on foreign cash withdrawals. Where the full balance was paid on or before the next statement date, no interest was charged on non-sterling cash withdrawals — unusual, since most cards charge interest on cash from the withdrawal date regardless of how quickly the balance is cleared.

Where the balance wasn't cleared in full, cash withdrawals attracted a higher rate of 27.9% APR variable, against 21.9% variable on purchases. Card holders were also subject to any separate fee charged by the ATM operator, which Barclaycard had no control over.

The card carried a recommended minimum income of £20,000. It also included an introductory period of up to 12 months at 0% on purchases, though it offered no 0% period on balance transfers.

Representative example: 21.9% APR representative (variable). Based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 and a purchase rate of 21.9% p.a. (variable). Annual fee: £0.

When offered a choice, paying in the local currency will usually let your card network set the exchange rate. Choosing sterling usually means the retailer or ATM operator converts the transaction, which may be less favourable. Check the rate offered before choosing.

The Barclaycard Rewards card is Barclaycard's current card for overseas spending, sharing several features with the Platinum Cashback Plus.

Our Barclaycard Rewards review covers its current rates, fees and cashback terms.
