The Santander Everyday Credit Card offers balance transfer capability and a 0% purchases period, and rewards in the form of Santander Boosts. The sections below set out the balance transfer options, rates and fees.
The Santander Everyday Credit Card is a combination of purchases card, balance transfer card and rewards card, and there are two options: a no fee balance transfer and a long term balance transfer. Some other cards on the market offer longer 0% promotional periods. One feature of the Santander card is that all successful applicants receive the full advertised period, rather than a shorter one for some. This applies to both purchases and balance transfers.
(Top Tip: To find out if a card will give the full advertised period of 0% interest, or if you might get a shorter period once approved, see if they say "0% interest on balance transfers for X months" or "0% interest on balance transfers for up to X months". If they include "up to" then you might get a shorter 0% period.)
Representative example: Representative 24.9% APR variable. Based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 24.9% p.a. (variable) with no annual fee.

You can apply for the Everyday card if:
you’re a permanent UK resident
you're at least 18 years old
you have a gross annual income of at least £10,500
you have not declared bankruptcy or had a CCJ or an IVA within the last 6 years
Balance transfers can substantially reduce interest charges on existing credit card debt. As long as you make your monthly payments on time and pay off the debt within your 0% APR intro period, you will pay no interest charges while you work to become debt free.
For example, a consumer making £35 monthly payments on a balance of £1,000 on a card charging the May market average of 24.66% (or the Santander 24.9% rate) will save approximately £530 in interest by switching to a 0% deal. At current interest rates, the potential saving from a balance transfer can be substantial.
You can read more about balance transfer cards here, including our balance transfer calculator which tells you how many months of 0% interest you'd need to pay off your debt, depending on your starting credit card balance and the amount you can pay each month.
The minimum payment on the Santander Everyday Credit Card is calculated as follows:
"All default fees, monthly fee (if applicable), payment protection insurance premiums, and interest plus 1% of the remaining balance shown on your statement, plus any arrears payable (subject to a minimum of £5)."
Let's look at a simple example where there are no default fees, monthly fees, payment protection insurance premiums or arrears. In other words, the simple calculation of the minimum payment due on the balance if you've kept up to date with all your payments to date, have no default fees, etc.
A cardholder with a £1,000 balance would pay 1% of the remaining balance (or £10 because 1% of £1,000 = £10) plus any interest owed. If you're in the initial 0% period then this would be £0 so your monthly payment would be £10. With the current 24.9% APR, a £1,000 balance would generate approximately £21.50 in monthly interest. Consequently, your minimum payment (typically interest plus 1% of the balance) would start at around £31. Because most of the minimum payment goes to interest rather than the balance, paying only the minimum clears the debt very slowly.
Santander Everyday Credit Card Minimum Payment Example (assuming £1,000 balance) | Santander Everyday Credit Card Minimum Payment Example (assuming £1,000 balance) |
During 0% period | |
1% of balance | £10 |
Interest (at 0%) | £0 |
Minimum monthly payment | £10 |
Out of 0% period, assuming 24.9% interest rate | |
1% of balance | £10 |
Interest (at 24.9%) | £21 |
Minimum monthly payment (starting) | £31 |
Paying the minimum only at 24.9% would mean it takes over 19 years to pay back the debt, paying interest of more than £1,800 over time.
