The Virgin Atlantic White Credit Cards are no longer available. The programme was rebranded and replaced by the Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card and Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card, which continue to be available to new applicants. This page preserves a summary of the original White card programme for historical reference.

About the White card programme

The Virgin Atlantic White card programme was unusual in that cardholders received two cards simultaneously (an American Express card and a Visa card) allowing miles to be earned wherever either network was accepted.

The cards earned Flying Club miles on spending, with the Amex earning at a higher rate than the Visa:

Card

Virgin Atlantic / Virgin Holidays spend

General spending

White Amex

2 miles per £1

1 mile per £1

White Visa

1 mile per £1

1 mile per £2

New cardholders earned 3,000 bonus miles with their first purchase within the first 90 days. Both cards carried no annual fee.

Annual spend rewards

In addition to earning miles on spending, the White Amex offered two milestone rewards based on calendar year spending:

A Premium Economy upgrade voucher was earned for each £10,000 spent on the Amex in a year, up to a maximum of two vouchers per year. A Companion Reward seat (allowing a companion to travel on the same flight in the same cabin for the cost of taxes and charges) was earned once £15,000 was spent on the Amex in a year, provided the original ticket was purchased at a qualifying full fare.

Rewards value

The value of Flying Club miles varied considerably depending on how they were redeemed. Based on NimbleFins analysis at the time, miles were estimated to be worth an average of approximately 1.3p each, though values ranged from around 0.8p for economy seat redemptions up to approximately 2.0p for upgrades from Premium Economy to Upper Class. The estimated rewards rate on the White Amex ranged from approximately 1.3% on general spending to 2.6% on Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays purchases, assuming the average mile value of 1.3p.

Partner airlines at the time

Flying Club miles could be transferred to or used with a number of partner airlines, including Delta, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, South African Airways, ANA, Air China, Malaysian Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The partner network has changed since the White card era; some of these partnerships have ended and new ones have been added.

Limitations

The Amex card was not accepted at all UK retailers, meaning the Visa card was needed as a backup. Miles earned on the Visa accrued at half the rate of the Amex. The companion reward required purchasing a full-fare qualifying ticket in the same cabin class as the companion, which limited its practical value for those travelling on discounted fares.

The replacement cards

The White card programme was replaced by the current Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card and Reward+ Credit Card, both issued by Virgin Money on the Mastercard network. The move to a single Mastercard ended the dual Amex/Visa structure.

The current free Reward card earns 0.75 Virgin Points per £1 on general spending and 1.5 points per £1 on Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays purchases. The paid Reward+ card (£160 annual fee) doubles those rates. Both offer an annual voucher (redeemable for an upgrade, companion ticket or lounge access) for cardholders who reach a spending threshold in the card year.

Representative example (Reward Credit Card): Based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 26.9% p.a. (variable) with no annual fee, the representative APR is 26.9% variable.

Representative example (Reward+ Credit Card): Based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 26.9% p.a. (variable) and a £160 annual fee, the representative APR is 69.7% variable.
